Green Beer Day in Miami

Green beer has never quite caught in the country that invented red lemonade, but the St Patrick's brand has a growing fan base, with booming sales of inflatable tricolour hammers and ginger stick-on leprechaun beards.

A long-standing tradition, Green Beer Day has been part of university life since approximately 1952.Green Beer Day, the decades-old Oxford tradition in which students give an early welcome to spring break and St. Patrick's Day by drinking green beer before dawn, is facing more crackdowns by Oxford police and school officials who said the day encourages binge drinking.

Zoology professor Ron Wiley is giving students a physiology exam Thursday morning - on green paper. "When I thought about giving an exam on Green Beer Day, I thought, 'Maybe that's good.'

While the Miami faculty may not approve of Green Beer Day, much support exists for it among the student body. The Mardi Gras-like event also draws students from other campuses. "I have some friends coming up from other schools (for Green Beer Day)," said sophomore Joby Myers. No matter who's involved, the celebration on Thursday will draw crowds to start off spring break, beginning early and ending late.
